Unknown “branch” – PLANT ID

(Question)

These have landed on our lawns and on our roof recently. We don’t remember ever seeing them before. They don’t match any of our trees or bushes. What are they please.

(Answer)

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners:

The branch I am assuming is a woody top of a tree or shrub. Our best guess is to see if you have a sycamore tree in the area: WWW.Superfolk.com website has a photo of a sycamore in winter, scroll down to number 5: Sycamore Tree Winter Identification

University of Guelph website information on a Sycamore: American Sycamore

If you have a tree or shrub in your area that you believe may have dispelled the dried tips, please send us a photo for identification. The photo should include the trunk, the branching habit,  the underside and top of the leaf and if possible any blooms or seed pods.
