Soil for Monstera and Pilea Houseplants

(Question)

Hi, I’m looking to repot my indoor monstera adansonii, monstera deliciosa, and pilea peperomioides. I’m not sure what type of soil to get. Hope you’d be able to help me!

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners about the right soil for your three houseplants.

Our Beginner’s Guide to Growing Houseplants: A Toronto Master Gardeners Guide provides a good overview on the basics of caring for houseplants. It includes information on potting mix for houseplants. This mix is not garden soil, but a blend of materials specifically designed for potted houseplants. Our suggested mix of one part loam, one part peat moss, and one part coarse sand or perlite will work for most houseplants. If you wish to go peat free for environmental reasons, this previous ASK answer on coir as a peat substitute will give some details.

Readily available premixed potting soil will also work for most house plants, and should be suitable for your Pilea. You may want to consider using a potting mix identified for tropical plants to repot your Monstera.
