Propagating wisteria from cuttings

(Question)

Hello, does anyone have experience propagating a wisteria from cuttings of a mature wisteria vine? I am trying to start a wisteria from cuttings taken from a Wisteria that my mom grew. She is now gone, but it would be a great deal to me to be able to propagate a new Wisteria for our home. Currently the cuttings are sitting in water with the rooting hormone. I have enclosed a picture of a wisteria that my mom started for me years ago by rooting one of the shoots that came off the bottom of the plant.

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners about propagating from a mature wisteria vine.  If you search wisteria on our TMG website, many answers to wisteria questions pop up. Pruning is popular, particularly with large, magnificent vines as in your photo.  The link below suggests two ways to propagate: putting cuttings (with root hormone) into pots and to “layer” the trailing shoots from parent plant on the ground. When the nodes develop roots, plant them in pots.

Wisteria is a powerful and potentially aggressive vine, so it is likely you will have success with rooting your cuttings. Enjoy the redux of your mother’s lovely Wisteria.
