Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners:

Our Toronto Master Gardener Website has information/description on the different grades of Sphagnum Peat Most: Peat Moss Grades

Peat and Coir for Seedling This website has webpages that provide information on other sources of seed starters besides peat moss.

I did notice that there are different labels placed on Peat Moss/Sphagnum Peat Moss or Peat Soil. You will need to look at the ingredients/country of origin. Descriptions of Peat on the package to discern what you are purchasing: Dirt Connections Website has descriptions of Peat Soil: Peat Soil

I am assuming you will be growing cat grass, which is a combination of  barley, rye, oat, or wheat seeds. It is usually grown indoors with very little soil. A great project for children to grow grass indoors. Peat moss is not required as cat grass can be grown in a flat of a few inches of any potting soil. Peat moss is used as an amendment in soil for its water retention, that also keeps nutrients from leaching out and it makes the soil lighter in texture making it easier for roots to spread.

Due to its environmental impact of releasing carbon and the removal of peat moss from bogs takes away habitat for many animals, birds, frogs, insects, plants that are rare and unique to peat Boggs. There are alternatives that you may want to consider. Compost, leaves, mulch, coconut coir, and sand could be uses instead of Peat Moss to amend soil.
