Is Braided Willow a kind of bamboo?

(Question)

I’d like to know if Braided Willow is kind of bamboo? Is this plant invasive?
Thank you

(Answer)

In fact, it really is willow (Salix), and is created by planted several whips (small single stems) together and then braiding them. According to our research, these are our native willows.

They are not invasive, but do sucker, so you will have to remove new stems that appear that you don’t want.

Here are some interesting facts, one from a local grower of Braided Willow. And some information we provided to previous inquirers.

Growing it in a container.

Overwintering it in a container.

Growing it in the garden.

Enjoy this unusual planting form!
