Hibiscus – container-grown, with unhealthy-looking foliage

(Question)

Hi there. I have a hibiscus plant and leaves don’t look healthy. WAs wondering if too much watering, too dry? The plant is on terrace facing north but full sun all day. I kept it inside in winter but has been outside for about a week. I live in Scarborough. Thank you.

Thanks for your question about your unhealthy-looking potted hibiscus.

There are many reasons for why the leaves do not seem healthy, and the link below to a very similar past question we’ve answered will likely be a great starting point for investigating further.

One additional question to think about is whether the plant – by being moved from inside your home to your outdoor terrace – may also be suffering from too-sudden changes to temperature, humidity, light, wind, heat etc.  It is always best (as you probably know) to acclimate a plant gradually to its new summer home, i.e. hardening off.

Good luck; I hope you are able to resolve the problem quickly and that the hibiscus will give you many years of pleasure to come.
