FIREWEED PLANT

(Question)

I’m interested in planting the Fireweed plant (in Ontario) in the next month or so… will this species last until early fall, around October? Additionally, will it still appear to be in full bloom during that time?

From my preliminary research, it seems that Fireweed is quite resistant to cold weather, but I wanted to confirm this with an expert. If it won’t last, will you be able to suggest alternatives?

This is time sensitive and any information you can provide would be appreciated… thanks for your help!

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out with your question about planting Fireweed (scientific name Chamaenerion angustifolium). Fireweed is a perennial wildflower, native to Ontario, that grows in open areas such as roadsides, fields, ravines, and woods. Fireweed gets its name from its habit of growing quickly after a forest fire. It spreads by seeds and rhizomes, so it can be an “aggressive” grower that would suit a cottage or informal garden. It is a lovely plant that provides nourishment for variety of pollinators and other wildlife.

Fireweed typically blooms from July to September in Ontario zones 2-7.  With our warming climate, it is possible that fireweed may still be blooming in October, but there is no guarantee that it would still be in full bloom. If you want to experiment (and I think a lot of gardening is experimental), try planting fireweed and see how late in the season it blooms in your garden.

If you want to write to us again and tell us how much sunlight you receive (in the area you want to plant), and what your soil conditions are, we can help you find alternative plants that would be suitable for you. Please Search our website and you will find other resources on native plants.

Also you could search the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Encyclopedia for other options.
