Coral bells

(Question)

Hi. I’m looking for a variety of coral bell with red or burgundy leaves that holds its red colour (or most of its red colour) in full shade throughout the season. The area receives about 3 hours of sun per day. Are there any such varieties? Thank you.

Thank you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners.   Heuchera (coral bells) are prized for their foliage colour.   Heucheras are evergreen (foliage will remain over the winter) and will thrive in well-draining, average to moist soil conditions.  There are a number of varieties with red foliage including:  Fire Alarm, Forever Red, Red Dragon, and Northern Exposure Red.  Varieties with burgundy foliage include:  Berry Marmalade, Berry Smoothie, Cherry Cola, Palace Purple, Forever Purple, Georgia Plum.  All these varieties are suitable for sun or shade locations but note that heuchera foliage colour is best when planted in part shade (4-6 hours of direct sunlight).
