Columnar Privacy Trees

(Question)

Hi,

I am looking to plant some columnar privacy trees or cedars near a swale in a new subdivision. Swale is not major, has some standing water from time to time and is along back of property line. Soil is clayish. Looking to get privacy to surround a patio and block back neighbors view into our yard.

What would you recommend I plant?

Thank-you for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners with your question about hedging.

You haven’t specified whether your site is in full sun or part shade, nor your preferred height or growth rate. In any case, please take a look at a previous TMG answer to a similar question. There is good information there and some useful native options, specifically for wet conditions. Many of the suggestions are deciduous trees and shrubs.

Another TMG answer on hedging TMG gives some additional suggestions for coniferous trees for hedging. Eastern white cedars (Thuja occidentalis) and their many cultivars, tend to be columnar and will provide year-round privacy, if that is an issue.

You may wish to choose a few different varieties to create an informal, or “tapestry” hedge with a variety of textures, heights and colours.

Regardless of the tree (or trees) that you select, you will find it helpful to consult the Landscape Ontario Tree Planting Guide and the Toronto Master Gardeners Guide: Planting a Tree for Life.

Best of luck with your tree selection and planting!
