Canadian Jasmine

(Question)

I was recently gifted a planned the owner called Canadian Jasmine, I have no experience with this plant, but it flowered this year and I would like to move it to a more permanent spot, but I’m not sure where to put it, It looks like it has long stems or vines. I’m not sure if it is climbing if anyone could just provide me some information about this plant. It comes back every year that’s all I know. Should I put it on a trellis? Any and all information will be helpful
Thank you looking forward to hearing from you

Thank you for your question and for contacting Toronto Master Gardeners. Your question sent me on quite a search as “Canadian” Jasmine is not a name that I was able to find. That is the problem when gardeners use common names! I wonder if the previous owner of the plant meant Winter Jasmine, which would be Jasminum nudiflorum.

This article from The Spruce provides a list of jasmine species so I thought it would be a good start for you to compare your plant to the photos and descriptions. Be aware though that the Plant Hardiness Zones in this article use the American rating system. To find the equivalent Canadian Plant Hardiness Zone, add one hardiness zone. For example, a plant with USDA Hardiness Zone 7 would be the equivalent of Zone 8 here, so not suitable for growing outdoors in Toronto. (Toronto’s plant hardiness zones are Zone 6 closer to Lake Ontario and Zone 5 further away from the Lake.) Gardeners in Toronto do grow Jasmine plants but either indoors exclusively, or indoors over the winter then move their plants outdoors for the summer to avoid our cold winters and cool spring and fall seasons.

Once you have determined the type of Jasmine plant you own, I suggest you use the internet to research the characteristics of that particular species. Be sure to use the Latin name as well as the common names in your search in order to get the correct description and how you should care for it.
