Baptisia

(Question)

I have an area next to my deck approximately 4′ X 2′ and am considering Baptisia for this spot. How many plants should I place in a plot this size? Thanks!

(Answer)

Dear Gardener,

Thank you for reaching out to Toronto Master Gardeners about your planting plans for Baptisia (common names – blue false indigo, wild indigo).

Baptisia, an herbaceous perennial, is native to the eastern US and has been naturalized in Ontario. Your question does not mention the species of Baptisia so this answer assumes that you plan to plant one of the more common species: Baptisia australis. It is tolerant of a variety of soils, full sun to part shade and dry to medium soil moisture. This species grows to approximately 100-120 cm (3-4 feet) tall and wide.

Since the area in which you are planting Baptisia is 2 feet x4 feet (60×120 cm), it is suggested that there is room for one but not more than 2 plants. Depending on the growing conditions, it may take the plant several years to reach its full size. The author of this response grows a single Baptisia, the size of which is easily managed through pruning. To view Baptisia, mature plants can be found in the Toronto Botanical Garden.
